Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards scored big at this year’s 25th anniversary Monterey International Wine Competition earning “Best of Class” honors and a Platinum Medal (94 points) for its 2015 Tempranillo and “Best of Class” and Platinum Medal (95 points) for its 2016 Grüner Veltliner – S. Reustle also won Gold Medals for their 2015 Merlot and 2015 Pinot Noir Reserve, while Silver Medals were awarded to their 2016 Syrah Reserve, 2016 Syrah, 2016 Malbec, 2015 Syrah Reserve, 2015 Pinot Noir, 2015 Tempranillo Reserve, 2015 Syrah, and 2016 Grüner Veltliner-Estate.
Regarding Reustle’s Tempranillo, Judges from this years competition commented, “This massive Tempranillo has a very firm grip up front, so give yourself a sip or two to calibrate before dismissing it prematurely. Cherry and chocolate aromas translate well on the palate, with notes of fresh roasted coffee coming forward on the finish. You’ll want a big prime rib slab with this one! A Platinum Award Winner at the 2018 Monterey International Wine Competition.”
The judges commented , “Grüner Veltliner is steadily gaining a toehold domestically thanks to wines like this one, where rich mid palate and scouring acidity play well together, showcasing Meyer lemon citrus and green bean aromas and flavors wrapped around a core of granite minerality. A lingering sweet lemon finish really hangs on. Great Stuff! A Platinum Award Winner at the 2018 Monterey International Wine Competition” about Reustle’s 2016 Grüner Veltliner – S.
Owner/Winemaker Stephen M. Reustle was obviously please with this years results stating, “To win any medal at this level of competition means you have made a great wine. To win Silver, Gold, Platinum, and especially a ‘Best of Class’ means you are really doing something right. To win two ‘Best of Class’ designations in the same competition is something extraordinary!”
Reustle continued, “To me it means all the hard work done early in the planning, selection of clones, and vineyard planting is paying off. We are seeing as our vineyard matures, each year, we are getting better and better fruit, which allows us to make even better wine.” Mr. Reustle concluded by saying, “We are seeing Umpqua Valley wineries on the regional, national, and even International stage more and more. Results like this validate what we already know… that we make good wine… really good wine in the Umpqua. People are starting to notice and it will not be long before the Umpqua Valley is known as the “Next” wine region.”
