ROSEBURG, Ore. — Wine lovers across Douglas County are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Umpqua Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) this Memorial Day weekend.
The Umpqua Valley AVA became official back in 1984, with a wine-growing history dating back to the 1880s.
Over 30 wineries are located in the Umpqua Valley with a majority of them hosting open houses to mark the special occasion.
Most of those are members of the Umpqua Valley Winegrowers Association (UVWA) and we’re putting the energy behind this weekend, really trying to get people excited about it, people coming to town, people that already live here that might have friends visiting for the weekend or just wanna get out and enjoy the weather,” says UVWA Executive Director Ali Rodgers.
The event will last from May 24-27, 2024, with special activities and wine pricing to commemorate the 40th Anniversary.
JosephJane Winery owners Leon and Kayla Glaser are more than excited to be one of the several wineries participating for the weekend. For the Glasers, they’re excited to show visitors the family offerings they’ve developed after their major win at a wine celebration back in February.
“The main highlights will be our live music, the case specials, the wood fire pizzas, all weekend. We’re dog friendly and family friendly so bring the whole family out, there’s something for everyone,” says Kayla. “We’re just really excited.”
Some of the events include:
- Abacela – Special Food & Wine Pairing
- Freed Estate Vineyard – Two for $40 bottles
- Girardet Vineyards & Winery – Two new wine releases
- Haines Creek Vineyard & Tasting Room – Sausage Sizzle and Lawn Games
- JosephJane Winery – Live music, pizza, and case sales
- Melrose Vineyards – Open House BBQ
- Paul O’Brien Winery – Special 2 for $40 bottle deal
- Spire Mountain Cellars – Second Chance band
